Perinatal Mental Health Service

"My role as a perinatal mental health pharmacist involves supporting mothers (and sometimes fathers) during the perinatal period from pre-conception up to a year post-partum. This includes counselling patients on the safety and risks involved with the use"

What is a Perinatal Mental Health Service

Perinatal mental health services can draw on the skillsets of a range of professional to work together to plan mental healthcare, promote healthy choices and prevent mental health deterioration or medication side effects during pregnancy.

The perinatal health pharmacist provides women who either want to conceive, are pregnant or have just given birth and are breastfeeding the opportunity to speak to a dedicated pharmacist for advice about the safety and side effects of antidepressants, anti-psychotics and general medication during these periods, and they offer medication reviews to make sure everything is okay.

They also support other health care professionals such as GPs, midwives, health visitors and consultants providing information on the risks and safety of medication during the perinatal period.
