Community Based Point of Care Testing

"The project was to encourage the GP surgeries to actually take on board the testing and to actually run the testing within the GP surgeries and it was a very much a collaborative approach. In the first year we saw a 26% reduction in patients hitting the acute services because of high out of range INR results and needing treatment we found that over 90% of the patients were much happier with the service than they had been with the previous service."

What is a Community Based Point of Care Testing

Through collaborative working between healthcare scientists, GP practices, digital experts and educators, the Point of Care Testing team in ABUHB has successfully transferred INR testing into the community.  The team has taken a continuous improvement approach to ensure the testing processes ensure high quality care.  Digital teams have enabled a whole system approach to enable visibility of results across services.  Training has been essential to ensuring testing is reliable and all clinicians using the system have access to the right support.
